KOTA SAMARAHAN: A seemingly routine act of assistance turned dangerous when a local man brandished a knife at a policeman who was helping him out of his crashed vehicle along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway yesterday (Oct 5).

The incident happened at around 11.35am after police were alerted by the public regarding a Perodua Myvi that had crashed into a ditch near La Promenade Mall.

Kota Samarahan police chief DSP Jaimi Husin, when contacted, said that a patrol unit was dispatched to assist the driver in exiting the vehicle.

“However, the policeman was met with a hostile situation as the driver emerged from the car wielding a knife.

“Police tried to de-escalate the situation but the man refused to cooperate. The driver was eventually detained with the help from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and the knife was also seized as evidence,” he said.

Jaimi added that the 24-year-old driver was believed to be travelling from Kuching to Kota Samarahan.

Prior to the incident, the man allegedly collided with four vehicles, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and veered into the ditch.

Handout photo shows a policeman checking on the driver in the crashed Myvi before the driver emerged from the vehicle wielding a knife.

He stated that the man will be remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 427 and Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

The Sections pertain to committing mischief that causes loss or damage, criminal intimidation and carrying offensive weapons in public places.
