KUCHING: A 67-year-old blind farmer from Kampung Bedup Longgo, Serian, has received food aid from Hope Place Kuching.
Daram Denap recently lost his sight and has no immediate family but was invited to stay with his niece’s family, where he now receives the food assistance.
He had lived alone in a small, run-down shack on his farm, where he grew pepper plants on a modest scale.
Last year, his niece was shocked to discover that her uncle had suddenly gone blind due to untreated glaucoma and cataracts and suffers from high blood pressure and cholesterol issues as he was living far from any medical facilities and without transportation, he had never been able to see a doctor.
Daram’s niece, Cecilia, took him into her home despite facing challenges of her own which included raising three school-aged children and a toddler and caring for her deaf and mute sibling.
With her security guard husband as the family’s sole breadwinner, Cecilia juggles numerous responsibilities while offering her uncle a place to stay.
“My heart goes out to my uncle who tries to navigate around the house, as he is always falling and sometimes hurts himself.
“But there are many children here to keep him company, and we are all a family,” said Cecilia.
Currently, Cecilia is trying to apply for a disability card and social welfare aid for her uncle with the help of Hope Place.
