KUCHING: Samarahan resident, Serani Anang, 54, survives by foraging for shellfish and wild vegetables in the absence of a steady income.
It has been a daily struggle but thanks to Hope Place Kuching the woman who lives on her own is now receiving much-needed support to cope with life.
The non-governmental organisation (NGO) stepped in recently to provide basic food assistance to Serani who has diabetes and high blood pressure.
Serani, who once worked as a cleaner, stopped working nine months ago.
These days, she collects shellfish from a nearby river to sell and supplements her income by selling wild vegetables when the river yields little.
Serani revealed that she began working at 12 and never had the chance to attend school.
“I don’t know how to read or write, but I will always find a way to survive,” she told Hope Place during their first visit.
The NGO found Serani seated outside her home making a patchwork blanket, a testament to her refusal to stay idle.
“I always keep my hands busy as I don’t like idleness,” she said.
Those who wish to assist her can contact Hope Place at 082-505987 or 013 567 2775.
Donations are welcome and receipts are available upon request.
These contributions can also be made via bank transfer to Maybank 5112 8900 1160 or through the Sarawak Pay/S PAY GLOBAL QR code on the organisation’s Facebook page.
