KUCHING: Hope Place has stepped forward to assist a bedridden former soldier with the Territorial Army in need of help.
In a statement issued yesterday, Hope Place revealed that the former soldier, who has fallen on hard times, sought urgent help from the non-governmental organisation (NGO) recently.
It said Suwi Tugok, 53, suffered multiple strokes and is now bedridden at his home at Kampung. Meriam Bedup, Serian.
“Suwi lives with his wife and 64-year-old brother, and does not have any children of his own.
“He had a stroke twice before and in March this year, he had another stroke again and became bedridden. Unable to move or speak, he is on tube feeding as well, taking special milk supplements once every three hours,” the statement said.
Suwi worked only as a labourer at his village before his health deteriorated.
“His wife, Elma, also does not work, and is taking care of Suwi day and night. Therefore the only breadwinner of the household now is Suwi’s older brother who is a vegetable farmer.
“Although Suwi receives RM500 monthly from the social welfare, money is tight for his family. With medical expenses and household bills to pay, the family could not afford the expensive special milk powder for Suwi consistently,” it added.
Hope Place is supplying Suwi with special milk powder and adult diapers. The NGO thanks all donors who generously donate items such as these to help those who are either disabled or bedridden, here in Kuching.
