KUCHING: HAUS KCH is set to launch the art exhibition titled ‘The Past Is Present Is Future’ on November 23, combining selected works and artefacts from two recently concluded exhibitions, ‘Altered Natives’ and ‘Roots & Remixes,’ as part of the Seni Kita Weekend: Subcultures art programme.

In a press statement issued by HAUS KCH, Sonia Luhong, the exhibition curator, highlighted that both ‘Roots & Remixes’ and ‘Altered Natives’ explores the essence of being 21st-century Borneans.

“Through ‘THE PAST IS PRESENT IS FUTURE’ art exhibition, we aim to bring artworks from these two exhibitions into the same space to further highlight the shared conversations that Bornean artists are having,” she said in the statement.

The statement revealed that the new exhibition features work by Adrian Jo Milang, Elroy Ramantan, Jasmine Dadi, Marcos Kueh, Mira Hector, Pici Pamg, Sang Tukang, Tuh Dek, and Zakaria Pangaribuan; in addition to cultural artefacts and heirlooms contributed by Asyilah Tan, Catriona Maddocks, and Jasmine Dadi.

‘THE PAST IS PRESENT IS FUTURE’ art exhibition will launch on November 13, 2023, at 11am for six days – ending on November 18.

“The undeniable local reception towards contemporary works produced by our fellow Borneans prove that modernity can truly coincide with tradition.

“We owe thanks to the support we had received from Yayasan Hasanah for recognising small businesses like us within the Malaysian arts industry, and for supporting our Seni Kita Weekend: Subcultures under the Arts For All Seasons grant programme,” said Syed Rusydie, exhibition curator and programme director of Seni Kita.

At the event, there will also be a exhibition curatorial tour by Sonia and Syed on November 18, followed by sharing session on “Bunyi Borneo: traditional instruments and contemporary innovators” will be presented by collective members of Borneo Boat Lute Revival, attendees can look forward to a captivating “Sunset Serenade Show” elevated by music from Sabahans Tuni Sundatang, and Sarawakians Rining Peter, Hayree Hisham, and Ezra Tekola.

The performance will be bolstered by poetry from Opah Aspa and Kulleh Grasi of Nading Rhapsody, there will be a DJ Set by Kawaii Boy, accompanied by delightful drinks from Ngirupp and delectable cuisine courtesy of JAWS Shack.

Seni Kita Weekend: Subcultures programme was supported by the Arts for All Seasons (ArtsFAS) grant by Yayasan Hasanah for the cycle of 2023.
