SINGAPORE: Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand under Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), played host to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, at its Takasago Hydrogen Park in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan recently.
Abang Johari’s visit represents a significant milestone in fostering collaboration between Sarawak’s hydrogen aspirations and Mitsubishi Power’s cutting-edge hydrogen technologies.
During the visit, the Premier and his delegation toured the facility’s integrated hydrogen value chain, gaining insights into next-generation hydrogen production technologies and validation processes for hydrogen firing in advanced gas turbines.
Abang Johari highlighted the importance of innovation and technology in advancing the state’s energy goals, noting that hydrogen will be key to the global energy transition, aiding Sarawak’s commitment to leading this evolution and the value of collaborating with industry leaders like Mitsubishi Power to harness hydrogen’s full potential for sustainable growth.
“Hydrogen is set to play a transformative role in the global energy landscape, and Sarawak is committed to being at the forefront of this evolution.
“Working with leading technological players like Mitsubishi Power and witnessing ongoing research and development in the field is instrumental to unlocking the full potential of hydrogen and influencing sustainable growth for our region,” he said.
Meanwhile, senior general manager of Mitsubishi Power, Takuya Murase, expressed his honour in hosting the Premier at the Takasago Hydrogen Park.
“We are deeply honoured to host the Premier of Sarawak at the Takasago Hydrogen Park.
“As Sarawak advances its plans to establish a hydrogen-driven economy, Mitsubishi Power is committed to providing technological expertise and support.
“Our discussion during this visit reaffirms the tremendous opportunities to drive cleaner energy solutions and advance the energy transition in the region,” he said.
As part of its continued support for Sarawak’s energy development, Mitsubishi Power recently provided a 500MW hydrogen-ready gas turbine for the Miri CCGT Power Plant, developed by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) while groundbreaking for the project took place in November 2024.
The gas turbine is designed to co-fire fuel with up to 30% hydrogen, positioning it as the state’s most advanced power generation facility.
This milestone visit reinforces the strong commitment of both Sarawak and Mitsubishi Power to collaborate in advancing the hydrogen ecosystem and developing local capacity to support the state’s energy goals.
For the record, Takasago Hydrogen Park, established in 2022, integrates the development, demonstration and verification of hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation technologies with hydrogen firing equipment validation conducted at the T-Point 2 combined cycle power plant facility designed for long-term testing of new technologies.
