LONG BEMANG: Creative and unique craft products have high market value and can become a lucrative source of income for the local community, says Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau.
Speaking at the closing event of a weaving workshop at Kampung Long Bemang yesterday, he noted that handicrafts are more than just a hobby – they can be developed into a profitable career.
The workshop, which began last Friday, was organised by the Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OUCCI) in collaboration with the Federation of Orang Ulu Association Malaysia (FORUM).
It received strong participation, particularly from women in the village.
Dennis highlighted that some craft entrepreneurs have already achieved success in their businesses, proving the industry’s potential.
“The government continues to support the handicraft industry in Sarawak, which is one of the key assets in the state’s tourism sector,” he added.
He encouraged more young people to explore the craft industry, noting that such programmes not only help participants refine their skills but also open opportunities for income generation through high-quality handmade products.
