KUCHING: Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (Maceos) and Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) are working closely to groom future business event and tourism leaders in Sarawak.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this yesterday while officiating at the signing ceremony between Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and Maceos at Riverside Majestic Hotel here.

“Business events create more direct jobs than any other sector due to the expenditure of delegates on hotels, flights, shopping, entertainment, etc, which converts into tax revenues and increased employment opportunities.

“Delivering knowledge through business events will help resolve our social challenges, reform current policies and regulations as well as encourage new innovations that are on par with the rest of the world.

“Therefore, by doing this, we are aligning our human capital development with Sarawak’s seven key focus areas, namely Urban Development and Redevelopment, Social, Environmental, Agricultural and Industrial Development including SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy), Service Industry and Digital Economy,” added Abdul Karim.

The agreement solidifies a collaboration between Maceos and BESarawak in an all new Masterclass initiative under BESarawak’s education and innovation branch “TriBE: Innovation” that is set to become one of many strategies at the forefront in propelling Sarawak to become a leading destination for business events.

The programme encompasses a comprehensive eight-day course which will equip participants with Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in order for them to strive towards becoming a recognised Certified Meeting Professional (CMP).
