KOTA KINABALU: A grandfather managed to safe his grandson from being swept away by swift river currents while another boy is feared to have drowned while bathing in a river near Kampung Panagatan, near Keningau yesterday.

Jackson Mark, 10, was saved by his grandfather, Jainis Gampanga, 74, but the boy’s friend, Aloysius Alfred, 13, was unfortunately swept away by swift river currents.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said in a statement that the department received a distress call at 5.50 pm and a team from the Keningau Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the location some 16 kilometres away.

Besides the two boys, there were three other boys who joined them on their outing to the river, the department said.

The missing boy has yet to be found and the firefighters are still at the incident location trying to obtain more information to conduct search and rescue operations. — BERNAMA
