KUCHING: Logistics and accessibility in rural areas are being prioritised by the government to uplift the lives of rural communities.
Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom highlighted the critical role of reliable vehicles in serving remote regions with rough terrain during the handover of 12 four-wheel-drive vehicles donated by the Sarawak government to the Department of Agriculture.
“What is important now is that we already have vehicles. These vehicles will be utilised and maintained to ensure we provide better services,” he said.
“This is crucial because officers stationed in rural areas require four-wheel-drive vehicles to serve interior regions with rough roads and challenging terrain.
“In line with the government’s plan to create loops or roads connecting rural areas, it is imperative that we have better logistics,” he said after officiating at the handover at the Agricultural Engineering Division Office compound, Jalan Kumpang today (Jan 21).
Dr Rundi added that these efforts are essential to transform the lives of farmers, many of whom belong to the B40 income group.
“Our plan is to transform rural areas to ensure they achieve a decent income by 2030.
“Therefore, we must improve accessibility, logistics, and other infrastructure, including telecommunications, electricity, and water supply.
“The government has already begun enhancing the delivery of water, electricity, and telecommunications services,” he added.
Dr Rundi said inclusivity means not only focusing on urban development and manufacturing but also transforming rural communities, including fishermen, who continue to receive attention from both the federal and state governments.
“Food security and commodity development are critical. With improved income and food security, Sarawak will become more prosperous and advanced,” he said.
