SIBU: Good mental health is the key to excellent future generations, says Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

The Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government called on students not to be ashamed to share their problems or feelings as an important step in maintaining mental health from the beginning.

He said this at the Community Mental Health Literacy Programme held at Masland Methodist Church here, attended by 500 students and 20 teachers from SJKC Methodist, on Tuesday (Jan 7).

The event is organised by the Sibu Mental Health Association (SMHA) in collaboration with the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Jalan Merdeka, Jalan Oya, Jalan Berjaya, Jalan Muhibbah and Pearl Garden.

“School friends, teachers, and parents are reliable individuals to share problems and feelings.

“Do not feel shy to express what you are experiencing. This is important to keep mental health in good condition,” he stressed.

According to Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assembyman, strong mental health not only ensures that individuals can live a balanced life but also build a strong character in contributing to the country.

“Mental health needs to be taken care of at a young age. It is smarter to ensure that mental and physical health are always in good condition than waiting for treatment, which may be too late and painful.”

He also reminded that co-curricular activities play an important role in enhancing student social interactions and wellbeing.

Physical activity carried out through the curriculum not only helps to build a healthy body but also contributes to better mental health.

Tiang also praised the efforts of the school, parents and the community in providing the best support for the younger generation.

“Schools, parents, and the community have invested a lot in shaping our future generations. Their success lies not only in academic achievement, but also in social skills, mental strength and life balance.”

He hoped that such a programme could be continued to ensure that the younger generation had a strong mental and physical health to meet future challenges.
