MIRI: Students’ involvement in sports has a vital influence in shaping up their character.
Political secretary to the Chief Minister Julaini Mokhtar, who pointed this out, therefore strongly encouraged school students to get involved in sports and games.
Speaking at the launch of the two-day SMK ST Columba Miri’s 64th sports meet this morning held here at Miri stadium, Julaini added students could learn important life lessons from sports involvement.
He was representing Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin who is also Senadin assemblyman.
A total of 1, 170 students comprising those from Form One up to Form Five classes are taking part in the two-day event that ends today.
“There are many ways one can benefit by getting involved in sports and games,” he pointed out.
“Make sports your career; your sports involvement helps you to stand out in the job market,” he added, citing as good examples several successful sportsmen and sportswomen produced by the country such as top shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei, diving queen and Olympian Pandelela Rinong Pamg as well as soon-to-retire squash queen Datuk Nicol David. These are prime examples that sports could be chosen as a rewarding career.
However, one must be committed in the chosen field, Julaini pointed out.
“Sports also can create stronger and more energetic individuals; it is a tool for holistic development,” he added.
During the launch, Julaini also announced an allocation of RM5,000 from the assistant minister as grant to help organise school activities.
Also present at the launching was the school’s deputy principal Lai Shu Leni Ales.
