KUCHING: Gedong, which has been elevated to a full district, has established a District Council, welcoming 31 members to oversee governance and development initiatives there.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian called on the newly appointed councillors to work together to ensure the development and delivery of municipal services are effective and efficient.

He said local government institutions have roots that stretch back through the annals of time, shaped by the complex tapestry of colonialism, the struggle for independence and the quest for self-governance.

Highlighting the evolution of local government institutions, Dr Sim stressed their pivotal role in education, public health and environmental conservation.

“Over the decades, our local government institutions have evolved and matured, adapting to the changing needs and aspirations of our people.

“In both education and public health, our local governments have been pivotal in ensuring access and quality while also leading efforts in environmental conservation and sustainability.

“In the face of mounting ecological challenges, our councils have stepped up to protect our natural heritage, implementing policies and initiatives aimed at preserving our planet for future generations,” he said.

He said this during the swearing-in ceremony of Gedong District Council councillors at Hikmah Exchange today (Mar 4).

Dr Sim, who also serves as Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government stressed the relevance of local councils in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, citing their deep understanding of local needs, challenges and resources.

As such, he called for active participation from Gedong District Council in localising SDGs and contributing to a sustainable future.

The ceremony was also attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is Gedong assemblyman.

As Gedong welcomed its new councillors, Dr Sim reaffirmed the commitment to democratic principles, accountability, and community service.

“Together, let us strive to build upon the legacy of those who came before us, working tirelessly to create a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
