KAPIT: Vanessa Teresa emerged as the champion of Kumang Gawai Kapit last Sunday (May 22).

The 18-year-old lass from Laso longhouse, Nanga Entawau defeated nine other contestants.

She took home RM2,500 plus a 42-inche television, beauty vouchers, a trophy and a hamper.

The Lulong name and Selinggar Matahari were won by Clara Presila Moses and Catalina Paloma Tuah respectively.

They received RM2,000 and RM1,500 respectively, and Clara also got a prize of the best outfit.

There were seven other contestants and they were give consolation cash prizes of RM550 each together with a bouquet.

“The prizes were presented by by Coordinator of Special Duties at the Premier of Sarawak’s Office Datuk Angelina Celestine Ujang and wife of Hulu Rajang assemblyman, Datuk Leyta Kupa.

The Kumang Gawai Kapit was held as part of the Kapit Gawai Bazaar (BGK) where Hulu Rajang Assemblyman Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong officiated on behalf of Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.

The audience that night was also entertained a singer, Ricky L, and the performance of a traditional dance ‘Ngajat Ngalu Temuai, by members of Kapit Dance Association.

Also present at the event were Kapit District Officer Ceriselogo Sabut (who also chaired the BGK Management Committee), and Temenggung Datuk Wilfred Billy Panyau.

So 2,000 residents from all over the town and surrounding areas attended the event.
