MIRI: The heartfelt generosity of the public has raised RM87,759.60 to aid 11-month-old Rhea Moh Ning Xuan in her journey towards receiving a life-changing cochlear implant.
The fundraising campaign, which ran from December 4 to 13, culminated in the issuing of a RM55,000 cheque to HearLife Borneo SB to cover the cost of the cochlear implant device.
An additional RM70,000, contributed by Rhea’s parents, brought the total to RM125,000, which covers the cost of the device alone, excluding surgery and other associated expenses.
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Performing Arts and Creative Industry, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, who is also the chairman of SUPP Piasau branch and SUPP secretary-general, expressed his gratitude to all involved during a cheque presentation ceremony on Wednesday.
“After deducting the RM55,000 payment to HearLife Borneo SB, we have a remaining balance of RM32,759.60. Today, I am pleased to present this cheque to Rhea’s mother, Janet Teng Ling Sieng, to assist with follow-up treatments and related expenses in Kuching,” said Ting.
The cheque presentation was attended by Rhea’s parents, Janet Teng Ling Sieng, 28, and Moh Nien Chong, 31.
The cochlear implant surgery, scheduled for this coming December 22. will take place at Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) here.
Dr Tang from Kuching, in collaboration with HearLife Borneo SB, has graciously agreed to perform the operation free of charge as part of BMC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
Ting commended their compassion, stating, “I am incredibly thankful to Dr Doris Jong for arranging this and to her and Dr Tang for their generosity. Their selflessness and love for this baby have made this possible.”
The initiative began earlier this month when Rhea’s parents sought help from the Piasau assemblyman (Ting).
Despite raising over RM70,000 on their own, they were still short of the amount needed. The campaign successfully bridged the gap, thanks to the overwhelming support of donors.
“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to this noble cause. The kindness of the public and the support of the media have ensured the success of this fundraising effort. This operation will undoubtedly change baby Rhea’s life,” said Ting.
Rhea’s parents extended their heartfelt thanks to all donors and medical professionals involved, expressing hope and gratitude as they prepare for the upcoming surgery.
