KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has urged the people in areas under its jurisdiction to give their full cooperation in the fight against dengue.
Its chairman Lo Khere Chiang made the call after 11 dengue cases were recorded at Lorong Liu Shan Bang and four at Kampung Sibakar, Ulu Padawan, recently.
He also reminded the public to keep their surroundings clean in order to control the spread and prevent dengue outbreak.
“Dengue cases can happen anywhere. It can be cured and it is something we can control provided we keep the environment clean,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He said Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant water which are commonly found in flower pots, roofs, cans, old tyres and even on plants. Therefore, the people must ensure that potential Aedes breeding places are destroyed.
“It is harder to control the spreading of dengue especially in forested areas because when there is stagnant water on plants, it becomes their natural habitat,” he pointed out.
On a recent case, Lo who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman said the situation is under control and MPP under the directive of the Health Department will immediately conduct fogging activities in the area.
He added that efforts are ongoing to enhance public awareness on how to prevent the spread of dengue.
“We have attached leaflets on house assessment bills as a constant reminder to the public to keep their surrounding clean,” he said.
Lo also advised the public to watch out for dengue fever symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and severe joint and muscle pains.
“Whenever someone has a sudden high fever, immediately go to the nearest clinic or hospital,” he advised.
Last Sunday, the Kuching Health Department office in a statement stated that 37 dengue cases were recorded at Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol which was in the “uncontrollable outbreak” status.
As of yesterday, the three reported areas were declared as active areas for dengue fever.
Sarawak Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim could not be reached for comments yesterday.
