KUCHING: The Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) is a historic initiative that reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to ensuring broader access to higher education for the people.
President of Pertiwi Progresif, Ivan Alexander Ong, said this programme addresses the main challenges that have long hindered talented students in Sarawak from pursuing higher education due to financial constraints.
“This step ensures that no student has to sacrifice their dreams just because of economic factors.
“By making higher education more accessible, the state government is building a foundation of a highly skilled and competitive workforce, which will drive Sarawak’s progress in key sectors,” he said.
He described FTES not only as an investment in students but also in the future of the state, reflecting a forward-looking policy aimed at shaping an independent Sarawak based on knowledge.
However, he said that effective implementation is crucial to ensure maximum impact, including smooth access, transparency, as well as additional support such as career guidance, digital infrastructure and job opportunities.
“The leadership of the government in this initiative gives confidence that all these aspects will be properly addressed.
“I commend this progressive step that will improve the living standards of many, bridge the education gap, and strengthen the socioeconomics of Sarawak,” he said.
He hopes that the implementation of FTES will run smoothly and bring long-term benefits to the state.
