SIMUNJAN: Four local men were nabbed by the police in a raid on an ad hoc cockfighting ring at Kampung Jeragam, near here on June 2.
District police chief DSP Nixon Joshua Ali said acting on public tipoff their team raided an open space located in the village around 4.30pm.
He said the four suspects were aged between 50 and 76 years old.
“The operation team also confiscated six live roosters, a dead one and a scale believed to be used in the cockfighting activity,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Nixon said the case is being investigated under Section 3 (1) of the Animal Cruelty Ordinance 1963.
He added that all suspects were also compounded for violating the movement control order (MCO) standard operating procedure (SOP) guidelines including not wearing face masks and no physical distancing.
On another note, Nixon revealed that the police here had also raided another cockfighting ring in Kampung Tuba, in Sebuyau on June 6.
However, no arrest was made as the perpetrators managed to flee the scene upon arrival of the police at 2.15pm.
“The operations team proceeded to incinerate the cockfighting ring,” he added.
