SARIKEI: Four Indonesians were detained yesterday after authorities found them operating a local fishing vessel in violation of licensing conditions, just four nautical miles off Tanjung Manat here.

According to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone Director, Commander Mahkos Juing, the arrest took place around 10.30 am during intensified patrols carried out in conjunction with the festive season.

“The boat is suspected of contravening the Fisheries Act 1985 by fishing less than 12 nautical miles from the nearest shore – a violation of its licensing terms,” he said in a statement today.

Mahcos added that the vessel and crew were escorted to the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) jetty in Tanjung Manis, and handed over to investigating officers for further action.

He also advised the public to report any maritime incident or emergency by contacting the Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 011-35727765 or the emergency line at 999.
