KUCHING: Four motorists were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in an operation dubbed ‘Op Mabuk’ last Saturday (Aug 26).
According to the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, the operation was held at two checkpoints at Jalan Tan Sri Datuk Wee Boon Ping in Padawan and Jalan Tabuan in Kuching.
In the operation, a total of 16 drivers – eight in Padawan and eight in Kuching – were initially tested using the Screening Device II (SD II).
The team then conducted breath tests using the Evidential Breath Analyzer II (EBA II) and found that four motorists had alcohol content that exceeded the allowable limit.
The suspects were arrested under Section 45 A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol.
If convicted, they may face a maximum fine of RM10,000 or imprisonment up to five years and disqualified from driving for a term up to five years.
The department asserted that strict and uncompromising action would be taken against anyone found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
Such an operation will also be conducted from time to time to detect drunk drivers on the road.
