BINTULU: A foreign man was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined RM50,000 for causing the death of a motorcyclist in an accident along Jalan Sultan Iskandar here on July 2.
The Sessions Court meted out the sentence to Usdin on Tuesday (Aug 15) and if he fails to pay the fine, his prison sentence will be increased by two years.
He will be referred to the Immigration Department for further action after serving his time.
Bintulu police chief Supt Batholomew Umpit said Usdin was also disqualified from holding a driving licence for 10 years after he was charged for causing the death of another road user.
“He had caused the death of a 21-year-old local man who was riding a motorcycle at around 12.56 am.
“The foreigner, at the time, was driving a Toyota Unser that had entered the opposite lane and collided with the victim’s motorcycle which was travelling from JKR traffic light to Pasar Lama,” he said.
He added that the convicted is also charged under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, by going against the traffic flow while under the influence of alcohol.
Batholomew reminded road users in the district to avoid driving if they are under the influence of alcohol.
Those found driving under the influence of alcohol, will be investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a fine of up to RM30,000 or up to two years imprisonment, if convicted.
At the same time, drivers can also be disqualified from driving for a period of up to two years.
