GEDONG: Sarawak is prioritising food security and agriculture as key focus areas under the 70 per cent allocation of the state’s Budget 2025 for rural development.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said agriculture plays a critical role in ensuring food security and enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities.
“We have provided essential infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply, and digital connectivity to rural areas. This will not only improve agricultural productivity but also boost food processing capabilities,” he said.
Abang Johari told the media this after officiating the closing ceremony of the Digital Desa Bank Rakyat 2025 programme at Anjung Pembangunan Usahawan Gedong today (Jan 28).
The Gedong assemblyman also pointed out that better road connections, such as the Pan Borneo Highway and coastal roads, will encourage tourism in rural areas.
With the government’s initiative to operate its own airline, he expressed optimism that destinations in rural areas, such as Spaoh, will be easier to reach, contributing to the transformation of Betong Division.
“Tourists can now access attractions like the Mulu and Niah caves, as well as the Padawan area in Kuching, which are becoming increasingly accessible.
“With the accessibility of such places, international tourists may want to explore the unique features of rural areas, in addition to the culture we have in these regions,” he added.
