KUCHING: Allocation has been requested from the state government to acquire a piece of land in Long Busan to transfer the local village to a higher ground to avoid the oncoming flood caused by the Bakun dam.
Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Duties), said that the proposal has been forwarded to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. It is likely to be accepted next year.
He stated this during a press conference today after paying a courtesy visit to the Malaysia Civil Defence Department Sarawak (APM) office at the Sultan Iskandar building at Simpang Tiga.
He announced that he had applied to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for 30 four-wheel-drive vehicles for the force in rural areas affected by disasters such as floods.
As to what would happen if the application is denied, he said that he had trust in the prime minister’s ability to fulfil the request.
“He is aware of the people’s hardships. He has directed all ministers to go down to the field to provide assistance whenever tragedy strikes.
“We are also required by the unity government to direct every agency involved to be prepared for any disaster. Sarawak has been told by the weather department to be prepared from January until March next year,” he said.
