SIBU: The flooding issue in Sibu highlights weaknesses in the town’s basic infrastructure, particularly concerning roads and drainage systems.
Pointing this out, Sibu Member of Parliament Oscar Ling Chai Yew welcomed the Premier’s allocation of RM2.5 million for the upgrading of Ling Kai Cheng Road, which was severely affected by floods, rendering it impassable to motor vehicles.
“However, many low-lying roads in Sibu also require urgent improvements. Additionally, severe flooding on Maaw Road on the west bank of Sibu, which connects Engkilo to Sg Sadit, has significantly disrupted the daily lives of residents, preventing many from travelling to town and going to work. This road section is in dire need of upgrading,” he emphasised in a statement today (Feb 4).
Furthermore, Ling asserted that the flood control embankment at Lebaan on the west bank is not functioning properly, causing frequent flooding whenever water levels rise.

He urged the government and relevant authorities to enhance and maintain the embankment while re-planning the area.
He stressed that the RM2.5 million allocated by the Premier is insufficient to address all the affected roads and that additional funding is necessary.
He also pointed out that Maaw Road, which experiences high traffic volume, must be upgraded simultaneously.
“I wish to remind the Sibu Municipal Council, Sibu Rural District Council, the Public Works Department, and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to prioritize upgrading roads and drainage systems that require improvement.
“I also urge them to seek government funding for these projects within this year instead of waiting for another flood disaster to occur,” Ling added.
