SIBU: The road upgrading project for Jalan Ling Kai Cheng will begin as soon as the floodwaters recede, assures Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.
He said discussions had been held with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh to expedite the project once conditions permit.

“We are preparing the necessary paperwork now, and hopefully, we can start raising the road level immediately after the flood. I will also continue updating the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) on the situation and seek any necessary support,” he told reporters at the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch annual flag sale today (Mar 22).
The RM2.5 million disaster restoration project will upgrade the 780-metre Ling Kai Cheng Road, which has been affected by flooding.
“I urge the public to be patient. The paperwork is being finalised, and I am confident work will commence soon after the flood,” he said.
On the flood situation, Tiang noted that it has impacted not only Sarawak but also Sabah and Johor.
“This could be one of the worst floods in decades, but authorities are closely monitoring affected areas. As of yesterday, 21 schools in Sibu were affected,” he said.
He advised residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions and seek assistance when needed.
“The Sibu Resident Office, Civil Defence Force (APM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and police are on standby. My service centre is also ready to assist, and food aid has been prepared,” he added.
