SIBU: Two local leaders from Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) today met with the Kampung Usaha Baru Sentosa village development and security committee (JKKK) to discuss local issues.

SUPP was represented by its Bukit Assek chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon and Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong, while Kampung Usaha Baru Sentosa JKKK was represented by its chairman Mohd Ali Serani.

During the dialogue session, flood was one of the issues that were heavily discussed.

A month ago, villagers were hit with one of the most severe floods in years when a combination of heavy rain and high tide in the Rajang River, plus the release of water from Bakun Dam, simultaneously occurred within a week.

Both chairmen agreed to arrange a joint inspection with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and Sibu Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to identify certain areas in the village that need urgent action.

During the dialogue session, JKKK members were also informed that the state government had approved a RM 25 million flood mitigation plan to solve their flooding woes.

A dialogue session between Sibu DID and the villagers will be arranged so that they can better understand how the mitigation plan will help to solve their flooding woes.
