KUCHING: Logistics support during the northeast monsoon season will be directed to the areas in Sarawak most affected by floods.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Jamri Masan said this when asked about the current monsoon situation at the Sarawak Bomba annual parade and rank insignia ceremony at their headquarters this morning (Jan 28).
He shared that Sarawak has been preparing for the monsoon season since November, as the northeast monsoon typically affects the state from January to March, rather than the forecast from November.
“The logistics movement has been planned according to the monsoon pattern, even though the current weather forecast shows rain mainly in the south. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of heavy rain in the northern or central regions.
“For instance, if Kuching is severely impacted, logistical resources from other zones will be deployed to assist,” he said.
Jamri assured that all zones have been placed on standby and are ready to mobilise the necessary resources as needed.
This morning, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather warning for Sarawak, forecasting adverse conditions over the coming days.
Sarawak is expected to experience isolated thunderstorms in inland areas during the morning and afternoon, while isolated rain is anticipated at night, from Jan 28 to Feb 3.
An orange warning has been issued for Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song), Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu), and Miri (Subis and Miri), indicating continuous rain in these areas.
Meanwhile, a yellow warning has been issued for Kapit (Kapit), Bintulu (Sebauh), and Miri (Beluru and Marudi), signifying expected continuous rain but with slightly less severity compared to orange warning zones.
