KUCHING: The flood situation in Kanowit remains under control, though authorities have evacuated 200 residents to Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) as a precautionary measure.
Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana said the flooding began two days ago, affecting 17 longhouses in the area.
“However, not all affected residents have chosen to relocate, with some opting to remain in their homes,” he told Sarawak Tribune when met at the sidelines.
Many evacuees have been relocated to PPS centres at the Kanowit Sports Complex, Nanga Ngemah Hall, and Machan Hall.
The Kanowit Sports Complex PPS, which was opened on March 20 at 6.30 pm, is currently sheltering evacuees from 75 affected households.
“Both sides of the Batang Rajang River have been impacted by the floods, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation,” Anyi stated.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to assist those affected, with personnel from the Civil Defence Force (APM Kanowit), People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), Social Welfare Department (JKM), Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Ministry of Health (KKM), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) actively involved in relief efforts.
Authorities have confirmed that conditions remain stable, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
