SERIAN: A total of 77 evacuees from 22 families at the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) in SK Tebakang were left without electricity for more than 24 hours after flooding disrupted the area’s power supply system.
Community Development Assistant Malini Kimpian explained that the outage occurred when rising floodwaters submerged all electricity poles in Tebakang, prompting Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to shut down the safety switch yesterday (Jan 29) at midday.
“The power supply could not be restored immediately as water levels remained high.
“This made it difficult for evacuees at the PPS, who rely on electricity for their daily needs,” she said when met at SK Tebakang today (Jan 30).
Authorities, including the police and relevant agencies, acted swiftly by deploying a generator to the PPS, successfully restoring electricity today (Jan 29) at around 5pm.
“The timely response in delivering the generator was a great relief for those taking shelter at the PPS, especially the elderly and individuals with special needs,” Malini added.
Three families were allowed to return home at 2 pm as floodwaters in their area began to recede.
PPS SK Tebakang currently shelters residents from Tebakang Melayu and Tebakang Bidayuh, who were evacuated after heavy rain submerged their homes.
