KUCHING: All Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates in the state affected by the floods have been urged to promptly contact their respective schools to ensure they can sit for the remaining examinations scheduled from Feb 3 to 6.

Sarawak State Education Department director Omar Mahli said candidates experiencing communication difficulties are advised to seek assistance from the relevant agencies at their respective temporary relief centres (PPS) to facilitate coordination with their schools.

“At present, school principals are working diligently to ensure that affected students can return to their schools by Monday,” he said to reporters when met at the PPS at SK Sejijak here on Saturday.

He also highlighted the ongoing efforts in flood-impacted areas such as Miri and Subis.

Mahli also expressed particular concern for students from SMK Bekenu, where 77 students living outside the school’s vicinity have been affected by the flood.

“Although SMK Bekenu is not a boarding school, temporary accommodation arrangements are being made to ensure these students are able to sit for their exams.

“We strongly urge parents to ensure their children return to school in time to sit for their final SPM papers,” he said.

Currently, there are 35,424 candidates in Sarawak sitting for the SPM examination.
