Five more native customs to add to pool

Five more native customs (Adat) will be codified after the drafting and vetting process.

In his winding-up speech today (May 24) Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk John Sikie Tayai said named these customs as Adat Melanau, Adat Berawan, Adat Kajang, Adat Bagatan and Adat Kiput.

Since the Sarawak Native Customs Council’s establishment in 1972, a total of seven native customs have been codified by the council.

“They are Adat Iban in 1993, Adat Bidayuh in 1994, Adat Kayan-Kenyah in 1994, Adat Bisaya in 2004, Adat Lun Bawang in 2004, Adat Kelabit in 2008 and Adat Penan in 2011.

“Another five native customs are going through the drafting and vetting processes. They are Adat Melanau, Adat Berawan, Adat Kajang, Adat Bagatan and Adat Kiput,” he said.

In the effort to preserve and promote Adat as well as to pool knowledge on Adat, the council has published a total of 23 books in 2020.

Sikie added that more books on Adat and traditional knowledge, would be published in the near future.
