LINGGA: The tradition of reciting prayers, performed in the middle of the Batang Lupar, is now revived by a new generation of fishermen here.
According to a local fisherman Ahmad Marbawi Loben, during the event, the fishermen will gather in the middle of the Batang Lupar (between Sungai Lingga estuary and across Tanjung Aboi) to recite prayers (led by the village imam) and followed by a light meal.
“Such programme is not unfamiliar among veteran fishermen because it has been a tradition for generations.
“However, for the new generation, this matter may be rarely heard as it has long been abandoned.
“That is why, the Lingga Fishermen Socio-Economic Club, led by Roslan Jaya, wants to revive this tradition — with the main purpose of asking for blessings and safety from God,” he told our reporters here on Monday (Jan 4).
He added that the recitation of prayers, led by Kampung Lingga imam Johari Morat and attended by about 50 fishermen, is a platform that can strengthen the relationship between fishermen as well as share ideas to improve their socio-economy.
When asked about the impact of the monsoon season on fishermen in Lingga, Ahmad stated that they (fishermen) can still catch river produces, although not as much as usual.
Further elaborating, he added most fishermen in Lingga will go out up to 12km from the mouth of Sungai Lingga to set up their drift nets.
