SIBU: The first phase of the Kiong Tung Community Park upgrading project, with a total cost of RM100,000, has been completed.
Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, said that the park, which was initially an open space with only a concrete floor, is now equipped with a basketball court and two badminton courts.
He added that the second phase of the project, with a total cost of RM100,000 from his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) grant, will further enhance the park with a walking or running path, playground, and outdoor exercise equipment.
“The residents, numbering several thousands, had previously requested the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to build a community park in their area. However, due to financial constraints, the council could not do it.
“During the 2021 State Election, I promised them that if I get elected, I will look into their request,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the opening of the park on Jalan Kiong Tung lane 16 here today (Feb 8).
Chieng added that the park can be used by residents to promote a healthy lifestyle, as the residents can come to do their exercise and for social interaction to exchange ideas.
“I hope residents will help to take good care of the park and not vandalise it. I don’t want to put up lighting as those who play basketball during night time will cause a nuisance to the people,” he said.
Also present were SMC chairman Clarence Ting and his deputy, Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.
