MIRI: A devastating fire engulfed Tuai Rumah Chengki longhouse in Jalan Rancangan Sepupok Batu Niah today, just hours before New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre confirmed receiving a distress call at 4.25 pm.
Firefighters from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station led by operations commander Rary Binjie were dispatched to the site, located approximately 10 kilometres away.
Upon arrival, the team discovered that the longhouse, comprising 21 doors, was already engulfed in flames, with an estimated 80 per cent of the structure destroyed.
Efforts to extinguish the fire were still ongoing at press time.
