KUCHING: An early morning fire yesterday claimed the lives of a mother cat and its kitten after a room used to shelter the pet felines went up in smoke.
The 6.35 am incident happened inside a room on the ground floor of a double-storey house at Jalan M Avenue, Matang.
However, the exact number of pets inside the room was not disclosed.
A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Petra Jaya and Batu Lintang stations were promptly despatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call.
Upon arriving, they found that the fire, which occurred in a ground floor room used to shelter the cats, had spread to the living room.
It was reported that the flames which had caused 30 per cent damages, were successfully extinguished by the home owner before the team arrived.
The firefighters ended their operation at 7.30 am.
