KUCHING: The Filipino Catholic community here has brought their cherished Christmas tradition of ‘Simbang Gabi’ to life at Holy Trinity Church, Kenyalang Park today.

Commonly known as Night Mass in English, the nine-day dawn masses leading up to Christmas, is a reflection of faith, cultural heritage, and the city’s multicultural harmony.

The opening mass, celebrated by Reverend Father Eugene and Reverend Father Ramon at 5 am, saw Filipino parishioners, accompanied by locals in a one-hour celebration themed ‘Prayer in a Christian Life’.

Known as Misa de Gallo in Spanish, the tradition dates back to the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines and is observed as a way to prepare for the Nativity of Christ.

It was originally intended as a practical compromise for farmers that started working in the fields before sunrise.

Today, this cherished Christmas custom eventually became a distinct feature of the Philippines culture and a symbol of sharing, hope, thanksgiving, and unity during the Christmas season.

At the Holy Trinity Church, the mass is celebrated bilingually, blending English with Tagalog hymns and scripture readings.

Such inclusive approach ensures that both the Filipino community and locals can engage in the spiritual experience.

The dawn masses, held daily from 5 am to 6 am, will culminate in a joyous Christmas Eve celebration on Dec 24.

All are welcome to join the dawn masses and immerse themselves in this unique cultural and spiritual experience.
