KUCHING: A joint Food Assistance Programme, involving festive baskets for the hardcore poor in the Kota Sentosa constituency, will be distributed on January 24 to help families celebrate the Chinese New Year.

According to assemblyman Wilfred Yap, this is a joint effort with his service centre, Farley Supermarket, and the constituency’s community leaders, who will assist in identifying needy families.

“I will collaborate with Farley while the local community leaders, including Kapitans and Penghulus, will identify the needy families.

“These 100 festive baskets will be given out on January 24 to ensure everyone can share the joy of Chinese New Year,” he said during his press conference held at Farley Supermarket here today (Jan 16).

In addition, the programme is to ensure that the less privileged will not be left out in celebrating Chinese New Year, as the food baskets are to support those who do not have the means to celebrate.

“During this festive season, we did not want to forget those who are less fortunate, so we are introducing this initiative so they too can enjoy the celebration of Chinese New Year,” he said.

Yap added that helping the needy during festive seasons such as the Chinese New Year spreads festive joy, strengthens the society, and uplifts the whole community by helping the less fortunate.

“As a multiracial community, people should strive to help the needy during the various festivals this country celebrates.

“I hope this programme will catalyse more associations to step forward and bring festive cheer by supporting the underprivileged during celebrations like Chinese New Year.

“Helping the poor is vital for strengthening society and uplifting the entire community by offering support and a helping hand to those less fortunate than ourselves,” he said.
