KUCHING: The federal government through the Ministry of Transport needs to exert a firm stance to prevent airline companies from arbitrarily raising ticket prices.

According to Senator Michael Mujah Lihan, the government needs to be sensitive to the issue of flight ticket costs, especially in supporting domestic tourism efforts to Sarawak and Sabah.

“Through the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), a formula needs to be devised to address this matter, which is often raised in the Dewan Negara.

“I hope that KPDN can examine this matter as thoroughly as possible to find the best solution or formula to resolve this matter as effectively as possible.

“The victims in this situation are the residents of Sarawak and Sabah who have no other choice but to return to their hometowns during festive seasons or school holidays,” he explained.

He said this during the debate on the motion of thanks on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal address at the Dewan Negara recently.

In addition, he also requested that early exposure to Information Technology (IT) sector be provided to rural students to prepare them for advanced and sophisticated levels.

Therefore, he appealed to the federal Ministry of Education to provide more comfortable infrastructure and internet coverage in all rural schools.

“This is to ensure that students and teachers receive comfort and exposure to the outside world,” he said.
