Family struggling to cope with tragic loss of father

KUCHING: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a father of five, leaving his widow to care for their young children as they come to terms with their profound loss.

Wan Khairul Nizam Wan Abdul Kadir, 41, died while riding his motorcycle to work at MASkargo Sdn Bhd here.

Jamilah when speaking to Sarawak Tribune.

His widow Jamilah Hassan, 42, expressed her grief and shock upon receiving the devastating news, recalling the heart-wrenching moment when her sister, Pojiah Hassan, 50, informed her of the tragedy through a video call.

“I didn’t see any viral issues on social media when the mishap occurred, and I had no idea it involved my husband.

 “My sister was the one who contacted me via video call, and I was completely shocked. Wan Khairul was on his way to work, riding his motorcycle,” she said.

She said this after the welfare visit and condolence contribution by the Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, to the victims of the accident on Jalan Stutong, at Kampung Tabuan Dani today (Jan 19).

The couple’s children, Wan Nazimuddin,18, Wan Ameerul Hakeem,16, Sharifah Ayesha Batrisya,14, Wan Asif Hamizan, 9, and Sharifah Atiya Nadira, 5, are now left to cope with the sudden loss of their father.

Jamilah said that the youngest child, only has a limited understanding of the tragedy, while the eldest, has been struggling to process the grief.

“It’s because the memory of the incident is still fresh in our minds, and it is difficult to process whenever we think about it,” Jamilah said.

Pojiah when speaking to Sarawak Tribune.

Meanwhile, Pojiah, informed that she was one of the first to learn about the accident involving her brother-in-law.

“Before the news went viral, I knew from one of his friends who happened to be in the area. They called me directly at my shop in Tabuan,” she said.

The widow’s sister reflected on the difficulty of delivering the tragic news.

“I was really shocked, didn’t expect it. When I had to tell Jamilah, I wasn’t sure if I should say it immediately. It was hard, and I was afraid it would cause her more distress.

“However, about 20 minutes after I informed Jamilah about the accident… we were shocked by the news of his passing at the scene,” she said.

Wan Khairul was laid to rest at the Samariang Muslim Cemetery on Jan 15.
