KUCHING: Sarawak hopes to be a nett food exporter by the year 2030, said Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
“To achieve that, we need big allocations from the state and federal governments,” he said.
In this context he said provisions under the revised Budget 2023 for agro-food and food security should be allocated in cognisance of need.
This way food security can be improved and increased as well, he added.
Dr Rundi said this when officiating at the 17th convocation of the Sarawak Institute of Agriculture here yesterday.
He was grateful that food security has been given a specific emphasis under the leadership of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Under Budget 2023, the federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been allocated RM5.39 billion to develop agro-food as a highly competitive sector.
Federal Minister, Datuk Seri Mohammad Sabu expressed hope that such allocation could tackle some of the challenges the industry has gone through including on production, supply and marketing of food.
