SIBU: ‘Ketua kaum’ and community leaders (KMKK) must have integrity, honesty, and firmness in carrying out their responsibilities in handling Sarawak Native Court cases.

Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai said KMKK is the backbone of the government which ensures that the government’s development agenda is delivered to the people at the grassroots level.

“Our focus on the programme this time is on the responsibilities and roles of KMKK in carrying out the legal responsibilities entrusted by the state government.

“This two-day programme is specially held for newly appointed KMKK and aims to provide exposure and proper procedures for handling court cases according to the established rules or regulations,” he said.

Sikie said this when officiating at the KMKK Sarawak Native Court Case Handling Seminar for Pakan and Julau at the Kingwood Hotel here today (Nov 15).

The Kakus assemblyman said that it is appropriate for those who are entrusted to carry out the role of this court to be given exposure, skills, and all the necessary knowledge on an ongoing basis.

“They will be exposed through briefings by Native Court speakers themselves about the correct, orderly, and ordinance-based way that empowers a ‘tuai rumah’ (longhouse chief) or community leader to handle court cases at their respective levels.

“Therefore, it is timely for the organising of a programme like this which aims to provide exposure, and enhance the knowledge and competence of the participants to handle court cases,” he said.

A total of 180 participants consisting of community KMKK from Pakan and Julau districts attended the seminar.

Also present were the Sarawak Native Court chief registrar Datuk Michael Dawi Alli and Temenggung Datuk Janggu Banyang.MYTV
