EDUCATORS and parents are urged to support the establishment of the Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary Schools (YSISS) by encouraging eligible students and children to enrol in the school.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the uptake of placements in the school fell short of the targeted 200 students.

“Since its operation in April 2022, YSISS has welcomed a total of 111 students in its first intake in which 60 percent of the students are from the B40 group while 30 percent and 10 percent are from M40 and T20 groups respectively,” he said when winding up the debate on his ministry yesterday.

Pointing out that school fee was not the issue in not achieving the targeted number, he opined it might be due to parents, especially from the rural areas, being reluctant to send their children to study in schools that were far from home.

He stressed that the objective of establishing the school was to offer quality international education to bright students from across Sarawak, particularly those from low-income families and the rural areas.

“That is why the State government provides full scholarship for those from B40, while those from the M40 and T20 pay minimal monthly fees,” he said.

On another note, he announced that the masterplan for the Sarawak Science Centre project was nearing completion while consultants were finalising the design of the centre.

“The centre will be located along Jalan Stadium, in Petra Jaya, where the site has been cleared, and earthworks completed,” he said.
