KUCHING: Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud has assured that Sarawak has sufficient supply of pork to meet local demand.

“In fact, we export 2,000 live pigs weekly to Singapore. Therefore, there is no need for us to import,” he said when contacted today.

He was commenting on Sarawak’s ban on the import of pigs, pork, and pork products from Sabah with immediate effect announced on Monday.

This ban was imposed after eight out of 13 pigs sampled from Pitas, Sabah tested positive for African Swine Fever (ASF).

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas in a statement on Monday said the ban was made under Section 8 of the Sarawak Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999.

He said members of the public were advised not to purchase or bring in pork or pork products from Sabah or any neighbouring countries.

He also said DVSS would tighten biosecurity measures in Sarawak and step up the surveillance of ASF disease throughout the state.
