MURUM: Employee recognition programmes play a vital role in motivating and retaining quality employees as well as preventing them from leaving a company.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala added that the implementation of such programmes also helped to cultivate a positive work culture within the company.
“Among the key reasons for a company to implement recognition are to boost team morale, nurture a culture of self-improvement, encourage a progressive employee mindset and foster healthy competition.
“The implementation of the employee recognition programme can help boost team morale. The concept is that when one member or team receives recognition, it can inspire others to perform better.
“The practice of employee recognition also fosters a positive work culture, encouraging self-improvement. Naturally, employees, as human beings, desire praise and recognition, which can motivate them to improve themselves,” he said.
Gerawat said this in his speech during the Danum Sinar Sdn Bhd’s Penan community workers’ recognition ceremony at the Danum Sinar Estate here on Wednesday.
He also said that the growth of a company could be gauged by the progressive actions of its employees.
“Employees who continue working without complaints or the desire to quit can help the company grow faster. Just like the self-improvement work culture, the implementation of employee recognition can also create a healthy competition within the company.
“When all employees share the same mission and objectives in their work, they will be more motivated to compete in a healthy manner,” he said.
Gerawat hoped the strong relationship that had been established over the past seven years between the Penan Metalun community and Danum Sinar Sdn Bhd would continue for the betterment of the Penan community in Metalun.
“This is an example that should be followed by other private companies that engage with communities. Companies should be mindful of the needs of the people in this area when implementing their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
“The community, in turn, should support the company in its efforts to strengthen its business as this will create more job opportunities for the local population,” said Gerawat.
