SPAOH: Rural students have been urged to make a concerted effort to master the English language, as it will equip them to face the world and its numerous challenges.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas made this statement while officiating at the closing of the English Language Carnival at SK Nanga Gayau yesterday (April 10).

Six primary schools from his Bukit Saban constituency participated in the two-day event, which was held under his patronage to foster a love for and excellence in the language.

“With a strong command of English, you will be able to communicate with people around the world, stay informed about global developments, and greatly improve your prospects of securing good employment,” he said.

Uggah further explained that for these reasons, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is steadfast in ensuring that English becomes the state’s second language.

“That is why we have the Dual Language Programme, and Sarawak is currently the only state in the country to implement this initiative,” he said.

He also encouraged parents not to hesitate in sending their children to the Sarawak International Secondary School in Kuching if they are selected.

“I have heard that some parents are reluctant to send their children to this prestigious institution due to the distance,” he said.

“This is very unfortunate, as the future belongs to their children, who should receive a solid education and possess a strong command of English.”

Regarding the proposed Betong International Secondary School under Yayasan Sarawak, Uggah said the government is still identifying the most strategic location for its construction.

He also announced that the tender for the construction of a larger and improved hall for SK Nanga Gayau is expected to be called next month, with an estimated cost of RM900,000.

Furthermore, he revealed that a new access road, costing RM300,000, is currently under construction for the school, while RM2.7 million has been approved for the construction of an overhead bridge across the Pan Borneo Highway to the school.

Uggah also disclosed that the Betong Division Development Agency has allocated RM3 million to support the development of all schools within the Bukit Saban constituency.

Meanwhile, Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, who was also present at the event, encouraged students to embrace the English language.

“English should not be seen merely as another subject on your timetable; instead, you should love it, develop your proficiency, and practice it, as it will be the key to unlocking many doors of opportunity, being a global language,” he said.
