LAWAS: An elderly couple was killed yesterday when their car collided with a lorry transporting 10-tonnes of stones.
The mishap occurred along Jalan Trusan, Kampung Berayong Baru, when the lorry was heading towards the town of Trusan, while the couple in a Proton Saga FLX were coming from Kampung Long Tengoa.
According to a statement from the Sarawak Operations Centre, a distress call was received at 1.11 pm.
Firefighters from the Lawas Fire and Rescue Department who were dispatched to the scene used special rescue tools to extricate the victims from the vehicle.
Medical personnel later confirmed that 67-year-old Peranchis Nane, and his wife, Raminah Tadam, 69, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the lorry driver who sustained minor injuries was transported to hospital by the public before emergency services arrived.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
