KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been lauded for his transformative leadership, driving Sarawak’s economy to unprecedented heights over the past eight years.

The Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) secretary-general, Libat Langub, highlighted the state’s annual revenue surge under Abang Johari’s leadership, from RM5 billion to RM6 billion in 2017 to a projected RM20 billion by 2025.

“This remarkable increase reflects prudent fiscal management, innovative revenue-generation strategies such as the state sales tax on petroleum products, and a focus on self-reliance,” Libat told Sarawak Tribune.

“The record-breaking RM15.8 billion state budget for 2025, with 68 percent allocated to development, demonstrates the government’s commitment to sustainable economic growth and infrastructure enhancement.”

Libat emphasised the Premier’s focus on diversifying Sarawak’s economy beyond traditional industries, catalysing significant industrial expansion.

Investments in green energy have drawn international attention, positioning Sarawak as a global leader in the hydrogen economy and a hub for sustainable energy innovation.

“Digital transformation has been a cornerstone of his leadership,” Libat added.

“The Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 has laid a robust foundation for a tech-driven future, with investments in digital infrastructure, e-commerce, and innovation hubs empowering local businesses, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), to participate in the global economy.”

Acknowledging the Premier’s unwavering support for SMEs and local entrepreneurs, Libat noted the positive impact of initiatives such as capacity-building programmes, SME-friendly policies, and the RM3.1 million allocated for SME development in the 2025 budget.

“These measures have played a crucial role in empowering grassroots entrepreneurs,” Libat said.

“Significant investments in road networks, bridges, and public utilities have improved connectivity across Sarawak, unlocking economic potential in rural areas and benefiting Dayak communities and businesses.”

While celebrating these achievements, Libat also conveyed the DCCI’s aspirations for the future.

He called for the Premier to prioritise inclusive development policies that address economic disparities, particularly for rural and indigenous populations.

“Programmes that specifically address the economic gaps faced by Dayak entrepreneurs are vital,” Libat added.

“Tailored initiatives such as microfinancing schemes, grants, and capacity-building opportunities will help overcome challenges like limited access to capital and markets, especially in key sectors like agriculture, tourism, and small-scale industries.”

He urged for stronger public-private partnerships and investments in human capital development to empower Dayak youth and foster a competitive entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“With Sarawak’s focus on renewable energy and sustainable industries, DCCI hopes the Premier will prioritise policies that balance economic development with environmental stewardship,” Libat said.

“This approach will ensure long-term prosperity for all communities.”

He also emphasised the need for improved market access for local businesses.

“We hope there is support for Dayak entrepreneurs to access national and international markets, including export promotion and digital commerce platforms,” Libat said.

“This will help them scale their businesses and contribute significantly to the state’s economy.”
