MIRI: Police rescued eight foreign women believed to be victims of human trafficking in a raid at a house in Jalan Taman Da Sing 7 here on Saturday night.
The women, aged between 30 and 58 years from Indonesia, were rescued in the raid conducted by a team of Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) around 9.30pm.
Preliminary investigations found that the women were exploited by their employers who had made them work as domestic helpers for between two to five years without any wages.
The victims would be asked to do domestic chores on a daily-basis and sent to work by their employer to clients’ houses.
All of the victims have no proper permits and were subjected to forced labour, said Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah on Sunday.
They are currently being placed under police custody at Miri Central Police station (CPS) to assist in investigations.
The case is investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
