KAPIT: Efforts are underway to provide immediate assistance and address the needs of communities affected by recent flooding, says Wilson Nyabong Ijang.
The Pelagus assemblyman said that torrential rain has caused water levels to rise rapidly, affecting areas such as Sg Amang, Rh Dennis, Rh Tatai Emas, and the Melatai.
“Critical facilities, including schools and government quarters or flats, have been inundated, leading to disruptions in the lives of many families.
“It is with a heavy heart that I address the tragic events that unfolded at dawn today due to the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in several areas of Kapit.
“Additionally, a landslide occurred at Rh William Ubu, Sg Sut, causing damage to the longhouse. I express my deep concern for the safety of all residents,” he said in a press statement issued on Wednesday (Nov 27).
He also expressed his deepest sympathy to those who have been affected by this unfortunate natural disaster.
“I am also deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Pastor Bangau in an unfortunate accident. Reports indicate that his car trapped at roadside drain overwhelmed by high water levels.
“On behalf of the people of Kapit, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Pastor Bangau’s family and loved ones. We share in your grief and are here to support you in every possible way.
“I urged everyone to remain vigilant and avoid traveling in areas with high water levels. Let us come together as a community to support one another during this difficult time,” he said.
Wilson added that in light of these incidents, he wanted the relevant authorities, to investigate the root cause of this flash flood.
