KUCHING: The genealogy of the Pengiran lineage in Sarawak is set to be documented, preserving its historical significance for future generations.

Sarawak Pengiran Lineage and Descendants Organisation chairman Awang Magerib Awang Ani said the initiative aims to strengthen efforts to collect and safeguard the history and identity of Pengiran descendants in Sarawak.

He expressed optimism that the project would soon become a reality, bringing together family trees that span from Brunei to Sarawak.

“We have long hoped for the existence of this lineage, and now it is becoming a reality. We are working to gather the family history of Pengiran descendants from Brunei all the way to Sarawak.

“This effort will foster closer ties among the descendants of Pengiran, Wan, Sheikh and other related lineages, which is one of the core objectives behind the establishment of our organisation,” he said.

Awang Magerib told the media this after a courtesy visit to Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Astana Negeri today (Jan 20).

He added that the organisation is also collaborating with institutions such as Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and relevant government agencies to collect information on Pengiran descendants in Sarawak.

Additionally, he said they are awaiting approval from the National Registration Department to authorise the organisation to register new births within the lineage, particularly those without the titles Awang or Dayang.

This approval will allow the department to accept verifications for families seeking recognition.

In a show of support, Wan Junaidi welcomed the initiative, emphasising the importance of preserving the cultural heritage, history, and identity of Pengiran descendants in Sarawak.

He expressed full backing for the organisation’s efforts to ensure that this heritage remains protected for future generations.

As such, Awang Magerib thanked Wan Junaidi for his unwavering support, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding the history of the Pengiran lineage in Sarawak.
